Sarawakians Live In Trees?

I saw the news tonight, they were interviewing participants from PLKN ... saying how they enjoyed themselves during their time spent at the camp (it was in SIBU), meeting new friends, learning new languages (for the ones from Semenanjung) and were excited to be selected to join the National Service.

Then there was this Chinese fella who's from K.Lumpur, expressing his joy being in Sibu, Sarawak for the first time. What surprised me was when he said that he at first didn't know and had no idea how people in Sarawak live. He thought, now ..... , brace yourself. He thought that people in Sarawak still live in ... (he paused for awhile, looking for the exact word, maybe not wanting to offend anyone) the forest (I think he almost wanted to say 'in trees', luckily he didn't!).

What??! What did he learn in school?? He seemed like a geek, I mean, looked studious and all. What on earth did he do when he got the chance to surf the net?? Didn't his parents and teachers tell him how the people throughout the nation live?? At this point, I'm not blaming the parents or the teachers, he is obviously a big boy. How is he going to survive in real the world?? He didn't even have any idea that people in Sarawak are like people in K.Lumpur too. My god, he's pathetic.

I'm not being defensive or feel offended in any way just because I'm a Sarawakian. I'm just appalled he said he had no idea people in Sarawak don't actually live in the forest. Yeah, some of our natives are still living in our beautiful rain forest but most of us has moved to the city (I guess, he didn't know there are cities in Sarawak??). Boy, you still have a lot to learn ...

Dear Ida,

Hmm... this is pathetic. Klu Malaysia ni sebesar benua Asia mungkin la kut, he cannot get the facts on all the states. Doesn't he pay any attention in Geography? Or no interest what-so-ever in getting to know Malaysia & Malaysian at all? he himself being one - why else is he in the National Service if he's not? Cetek sungguh pengetahuan tentang negara sendiri. Say, if he spends his entire life kat overseas pun, he should give some efforts in getting to know his own country - it applies to everybody I supposed.

I thought this perception is over. 12 years ago i heard about this when i studied in Peninsular Malaysia.

Not many Peninsular Malaysians really know about Sarawak compared to us, because many Sarawakians have set their foot to Peninsular Malaysia.

It's good that that person attended the PLKN here in Sarawak. He can spread the news to his friends that Sarawakians are no longer living on trees. Cheers!

i think only very few people has little knowledge of how we Sarawakians here live, not in trees that is.

hopefully they make full use of the web and learn more of how their fellow Malaysians live their lives

Well, most of them living there seems to be so ignorance of what happening around them..they should thank us for kindly join with them to form Malaysia..but hey..who's to blame for their ignorance..

Educators nowaday should play the important roles in opening their mindset about who's who in Malaysia and then the media shoulkd stop potraying Sarawak as a living museum, what I mean is that, everytime they want to promote sarawak, we'll surely see beutiful maiden doing their chores or whatever in the jungle or by the river..well..evrybody should do their bits in order to change people mind set of sarawak...

there a lot of handicap people in this entire world, but ignorance is not an excuse. More so if you are living in the same country. Pity that fela.

I still remember when I did my postgraduate study 10 yrs ago, the british (many of them) still call our country - Malaya!

sorry i was just clicking2 tru the web and i stumbled upon this blog. and this post.
hahaha~

I always get the famous question whenever I told them I'm Sarawakian too.
"do sarawakian people live on trees?"

i blame the national educational system.

and noticed sometime on media they said,
"Seluruh Malaysia termasuk Sabah dan Sarawak"
what's up with that?
